Welsh Cobs Diary 24 Jul 2010

Back safe and sound from the Hoys qualifier at the ~Royal Welsh~ What a great day, even though we had gunshot before the start of us going around the arena, I managed to stay in. JB was in flight mode, head up and totally hollow. He wasnt listening and trying to gallop off all the time, I was really struggling to keep him under control.

The individual was very poor, with his head up - all over the place, he did do a nice gallop, but trying to bring him back was hard. At home I only have to pat him and sit up and he instantly comes back, but obviously the adrenaline was way too much.

We got around and I was really pleased some videos on you tube. Dont know what our marks were as it was so late when we left. But would love to know ! lol well maybe not. He had dropped so much weight from Monday, but Im hoping that going through something that exciting might just make him realise that its not as bad as he thinks. The gunshots didnt help of course, thats upstairs have a laugh !!

Had my back done today, and Ive a few problems there, so quiet day today. Two tennis balls will be my best friends for a while ! lol

Welsh Cobs Diary 21 Jul 2010

Here is Saith DK and Saith Johnnie Bach. (having a smooch !) I think Ive got over it all now, and gutton for punishment, going again tomorrow for the HOYS class.

I booked in Amber and Johnnie to the class, so if one went down I could at least take the other. I was going to take Amber after Monday, but I just have to go through this with Johnnie. So no TV and if I fall off, then its just in front of a few 100 ! lol

Im hoping he settles a bit tomorrow, hacked him out for the past few days to relax him and have a talk to him. Big talk, just hope he listens tomorrow.

60 entered in the class, so probably 40 to 50 will turn up. He wont be noticed at all, im just hoping we get round ok this time.

Not as early start - leaving at 9.30 as we wont on until late in the afternoon. Wish me luck !

Welsh Cobs Diary 19 Jul 2010

Well I made it to the Royal Welsh. Got up at 3am and even steve was up there by 4.10, so we were off. Met Dot, liz and the great DK and was so excited and scared.

Went into the ring and JB was good, walking with a ping which I liked, then when he got to the grand stand we were cantering, which I did not like (well actually it was a lovely collected canter) managed to control him and went into trot and had a great time, but just keeping in control, which is pretty normal for JB at a show. Then went into canter, still keeping him there, and the trot across the middle which he did, then everyone seemed to walk and I thought that was it - ready for the gallop, but it wasnt.

It all went pear shaped from there. I asked for canter with people cantering around me and he just lost it, started doing leaps and I thought do I stay in the ring and fall off, or take him out. I didnt think long ! We turned around unfortunately in the hunter class - and a HORRIBLE woman was shouting at me, get out of our class - god if that is what these people are like out hunting - you can bloddy keep it. She could see I was struggling with him. Anyway, managed to get out of the ring and re-assure jb all was ok. he was pretty stressed out and so was I ! But I stayed on. Missed the gallop which I really was upset about.

Saith DK (dot and liz) stayed in and he was a star, just did the job - swopping next year ! My other friend Shelly also did the gallop and Ted was just great.

I felt like I let everyone down, especially JB and Steve I still have alot to do with him, but getting him to such a buzzy show and with me being so nervous, he had alot to cope with. Mind you when I saw the judge yanking a cob in the mouth several times, I thanked the gods that we did come out. JB would have had him on the floor.

We managed to do some good trots though which was fun, unfortunately Steve didnt manage to video any of them. So maybe next year we will start again and try to get the gallop !

When we came out I was saying never again. And then after half a bottle of Cava to drown my sorrows, I was ok whens the next one ! lol Which is on Thursday - its a toss up between taking amber and taking Jb to try and get him over this as again quite a buzzy ring. At least this time we wont be on Sky TV. lol So I can try and push him through it to show him that its ok.

Got home in one piece and turn out jb and thought, ok, we need to chase these demons out. dont know what upset him at shows for him to be like this, but Im not giving up - could take 10 years but we will get him to enjoy the shows rather than get stressed out.

Brilliant day though, saw some friends and had loads of chats, so tired now... bed is calling and its only 8pm ! Thanks so much for everyone who has supported me in the weeks up to this event, you have all be just so great.

Welsh Cobs Diary 18 Jul 2010

D day tomorrow ! Cannot believe how quickly it has arrived. Im just sitting here, with a glass of Cava wondering if I should drink the bottle ! Seriously, though, Im pretty scared. I know Jb will look after me. Hoping to leave the farm around 4.30 am and be on around 9ish I think. Im going over lists and lists the only thing left is my clothes for walking around afterwards. Wet weather gear probably !

I just hope I dont let JB down with my riding. Im old and not as supple as I used to be, and I think I will be hanging on !

Anyway, its just a bit of fun and looking forward to it as much as dreading it ! As long as we get round and Jb enjoy's himself thats all that matters. He will be pretty excited though !

Let you know what happens.

Welsh Cobs Diary 15 Jul 2010

Took SM Amber to NPS 25, in Bristol, lovely show. Got on her and thought Oh no. She instantly felt sticky. Said to Steve she' s not quite right, nothing major but just not there. So worked her in a bit, and she did everything, but not like on Sunday. went in the class and she looked so different. We have found a picture of an ancestor of hers that is her double from 1811 ish, but in that class she looked extremely light. She did everything ok, but with no spark.

So got Bethan up yesterday and she said she was trapped on her hind leg. sorted that and Bethan also did Jb - he had a nice massage ready for ..... MONDAY - ahhhhhhhh

Im really getting nervous now - everytime I think of it my stomach churns over ! JB was so full of himself today he was literally flying. I hope he is ok on Monday, and enjoys it as much as I am going to do and do a good job of hiding when the picking of the 20 cobs start !

So exciting.

Welsh Cobs Diary 12 Jul 2010

welsh cobs pictures Took Amber to her first show in ages. Since Ive only ridden her not even a dozen times, it was a trail to see where she is and what I have to do. Well, she was a star, she did wrong leg it once, but that was it. I cant get her to gallop at home, but she really went for it - I was so pleased with her. We came 4th, but she is not everyone's cup of tea being on the lighter side of the welshies.

She is off again tomorrow to Bristol for the NPS area 25.

Just cant believe its a week to go to the Royal Welsh Show. Saith Johnnie Bach and I will be in the ridden geldings class - I think it will be on about 9ish in the main ring. OMG im already wetting myself. !! Im going to ride him, like I stole him !

Its going to be an amazing experience. One I know I will never forget, especially if I fall off !

Welsh Cobs Diary 1 Jul 2010

Rode Jb and Amber yesterday - you couldnt get further apart than them. Amber does the most wonderful walk to canter which Ive never done on a horse, but still will not go into extension and literally does a one pace trot and thats it ! Some work there. tried a gallop - nope ! LOL So my individual will consist of canter !

Then JB, what a difference, it was trying to stop him galloping ! he was in serious pingy mode and we had some wonderful collections, but not through calmness !!

There is no way the ridden Judge at the Royal Welsh will be able to handle him, so I am definitely doing the gallop and hiding behind the nearest 16hh welshie.

Its a Bucket List thing really, before I kick it, or get too old to ride. :) Always wanted to do the Royal Welsh and gallop in the main arena. Then a HOYS class, that will be on the Thursday at the RW with Amber. Then a working hunter class - thats going to be exciting too as I always forget my way around jumps as Im so nervous. And of course, an Olympia class.

Ohh so excited already - only 3 weeks !!

Welsh Cobs Diary 24 Jun 2010

Great news ! Saith DK got to Cheshire county and came a very respectable 13th out of 27ish. Very pleased with that as he got a bit nervous showing, but luckily seems to be overcoming it now. Well done liz and Dot - superb result :)

Lucy and Saith Black Storm went dressaging on the weekend and got 3rd out of 30 and 6th out of 40 - very highly contested classes, well on to Lucy and Storm.

we were hoping to get to a show, but my car has decided to die on me. New Turbo needed (wish I could get one for me !). So thats alot of money, and no showing until its done. It will be done before the Royal Welsh though.

Rode JB yesterday and he was very full of himself :) Such a star. Amber on the other hand is very lazy and can hardly do a trot. So embarrassing as I love a cob to move, and Amber just says, not worth the effort ! Steve said that she doesnt have to do anything, but stand there ! lol I disagree, I love a cob moving with full extension, and she is old enough now to do it, but ohhh its naaa straight into canter ! Might put her in a riding horse class ! lol But since it was only the 3rd time I rode her - I suppose I cant grumble, she didnt buck or anything silly, a really good girl.

Laura Gray came down and had a ride on her, which was brill as I didnt have to do the work ! lol She is going to Hickstead this weekend with her ex-racehorse and all at Saith wish her the very best of luck and enjoy it !!

Cut some hay so busy with that tomorrow - so no riding boohoo. Having to be "driver " today as my son Rob has hurt his shoulder and needs to go to physio also Peter (hubby) is going to the Cricket and needs a lift in - doubt if I will see him before 12 tonight ! :)

Everyone ok, been in the barn most days (can come in and out as they want). Pepper - well has calmed down a bit so will be trying to keep him entire until autumn because of the flies. He looks a right mess at the moment, as he is very fit looking with playing with Jb all the time. I dont mind it, as we dont usually show yearlings, never want to put the weight on a baby, but would like a touch more on him ! :)

So excited about Royal Welsh, praying that JB will make it. I just really want to do the gallop then Im disappearing ! lol Might have a small flask in the pocket and incontinence pad on ! but apart from that - Im just going for the fun. JB is no-where near ready yet, he still has loads to learn about stopping, but I love riding him. We will be the most talked about probably as he will be in "full" welsh cob trot all the way around ! lol Who cares hey ! thats what they are supposed to do - lol

I will probably be nattering on over the next 4 weeks about the Royal Welsh ! so just put up with me :)

Welsh Cobs Diary 17 Jun 2010

Had a busy few weeks with Heidi and Frankie coming from Holland to see our horses. Heidi rode Jb and just said he was so light - wish he was in the stopping department ! lol. Had a lovely weekend with them.

Pepper is going to be cut soon - was trying to hold out until autumn, but he is just tooo much at the moment ! He is so coltish, poor jb has had enough of him, and he really needs to be on grass with the others, and not in the small paddock with jb.

Hopefully Coriander is in foal, and will be scanned soon. Put her to Janton Pheonix. Hoping for a smokey black or a dun. :) hoping anyway ! I think there will be only one foal next year as dream had a bout of laminitis and is only just recovering from it. She lives on air that one, so she is in the scrub field with fattie amber.

Trying to do amber but its hard, just want to keep doing jb. Had his feet x-rayed again, and all ok no rotation,Bethan coming out today to have another go on him and I should be able to start riding him. I really didnt think we would be going to the Royal Welsh, but now I have some hope.

I dont want to be picked though ! lol All Im going for is the gallop, and he'll probably be so tired after doing that huge ring that he wont, but knowing jb he will. He just loves to gallop like me. amber and jb are also booked into the HOYS ring on the thursday but we shall see about that. I still have to do amber as anything could happen to jb in that time. He seems to get over one thing and get something else !

Steve is coping pretty well with the pain in his foot and trying to come up most days to help out.

Very excited about going to Ascot on Saturday - royal enclosure no less !! So going to be looking at who to bet on - never win, so I always bet on every horse on the last race so at least I can come home with a win ! lol yes very sad.

Everybody else is really good. Jazz's cut is almost healed and Im really pleased with it, Ginger is looking stunning, Delight bored and needs to start work now, Hazel, just beautiful as normal.

Welsh Cobs Diary 29 May 2010

welsh cobs pictures Here is Saith Magical Delight, our 3 yr old filly. We took a video of her the other day and it can be seen on You Tube Saith stud channel. It will be on her page soon.

Not a good couple of weeks. Wont be taking Saith Johnnie Bach to David Broom's on Sunday to try in the Olympia class, as Bethan Lloyd came out to give him the once over as he still isnt giving to me. My friend Chris said that I should send him to Malcolm Rosser for a week's training, after seeing his video (on JB's page) and I explained that when you pull JB into an outline he cannot cope and would rear. he has never done this with me, but a few other people who tried to get him between hand and leg.

Chris came back and said its his poll then. I rang Bethan straight away and she came out pretty promptly and did JB for 2 hours and confirmed that he has old damage in his muscles and on his poll. She worked very hard on him and said its going to take a bit of time. Again.... He has been all out of sorts this week, getting used to the changes that Bethan did with him. She is coming out again on Tuesday and its back to the waiting game again. He also has pollen allergy ! Last year I thought it was dust allergy as we had not brilliant hay, so paid alot of money and got the best this year, no dust whatsoever, but as soon as the warm weather came, his nose swelled and his breathing went bad. I give up !!! Got him on global herbs now, and hopefully they will help him.

So decided that fattie Saith Magical Amber would have to be ridden and not put in foal. This is so I dont rely on Jb, even though Amber and I dont see eye to eye ! :) She's too clever for me. She is not happy as being so fat she is in the barn on hay.

Steve went to the hospital about his ankle and they basically said that he could have another operation to fuse it, or put up with the pain and swelling. It terrible, he can hardly walk 20 yards without it flaring up. He is going to try insoles to see if it helps. We had a heart to heart and decided that since he wont be able to help as much as he has done in the past, we are going to sell a few to make it easier for me, and not breed the four foals we had planned for this year. Dream (if she ever comes into season) and coriander will be put in foal, amber my second string for riding.

We will be selling the beautiful Paith True Magical Beauty (hetti) after weaning, superb breeding for a starting up stud, she is a very easy breeder. Also a few others, going to be sad as we were building up because I thought steve could help more and get involved with the showing, but its not to be.

Sad that Hetti has drawn the short straw as her conformation and temperament is so good. I just dont need to breed so many now, a few a year is enough. She has been a superb breeding mare to us and it will be extremely sad to see her go.

Contact steve or email me if you know of anyone looking for a top class breeding mare with special bloodlines, it has to be a loving home.

Welsh Cobs Diary 17 May 2010

welsh cobs pictures Had an exciting weekend. Took Saith JB to Amman Valley Show, and entered him into the M&M ridden large breeds. He was quite chilled and then once we started he got very strong. Managed to keep him in some sort of control and did some nice extended trots, not his usual full extension, but the ring was small and as I would start to gather speed, we would be at the end of the ring. Did a gallop and he slipped a couple of times on the wet grass, but it was fun. THEN the judge Malcolm Rosser - asked to ride the horses - I was pulled in 4th place. OMG I thought, what will JB do. I had to make the decision whether to let him ride or not. Watched him ride the first horse and was very impressed how quiet he was, thought ok this should be fun.

He came over and asked if he could ride my horse, I quickly blurted out that he was extremely sensitive and he just smiled ! He rode JB really well, even though JB was in his excited mode and Steve videoed the whole lot (on You Tube under Saith stud channel) Thought this guy should be the riding judge at the Royal Welsh, he could handle a welsh cob !! JB's video will be up on his page soon.

We ended up 4th and then I had to do a bit of work with him outside as he forgot all his manners and wasnt listening to me, wanted to jog and canter and do silly things. Eventually he calmed down and worked and I could canter him around the arena with a loose contact and him stay in a canter without galloping off or chucking his head up. It was exciting ! lol

Then yesterday took beautiful Hazel to Sunnybank's show in Caerphilly, she came 2nd to a lovely section B gelding. She is just so easy to do and a pleasure to show.

So a good weekend, I stayed on and really enjoyed myself.

Steve was supposed to go to Austria for the darts, but the Cloud stopped all that. He was not well on saturday having a few strange energy fits and then sunday his whole leg just went. Trading him in soon ! lol
Hoping he will be ok and sort of back to normal soon, as normal as steve can be. His ankle is still terrible and I must learn to drive that trailer as its just getting a bit too much for him.

Oh Hum..... see what happens over the summer. Booked Jb into the David Broom's NPS show on 30th May - he is not fit enough but will just do the trot with him and maybe leave after that, see how he copes. It will be my first ever Olympia class, have to do just one I thought ! Although Jb is no where near ready for the big boys, I just need to get into one and have a bit of fun and a laugh.

Welsh Cobs Diary 11 May 2010

welsh cobs pictures Here is Saith Magical Dream coming 2nd in a large class on Sunday. Had a lovely day and very pleased we came 2nd after watching the judge for the rest of the day - say no more !!!

We went for Storm really, and watched him do his ridden where he came 4th. Should have been higher and he has just started his extensions - really pleased about that. So ready for the big fight and he said no once and walked on the trailer. Lucy took him off for the ridden and I thought, he will think about this and we will probably have a major battle when he comes back.

We untacked him and I put the B-nice headcollar on and he walked straight in - what !!! took him back out and in and out and in and out, and nothing - so funny. He is a real character no doubts about that. Storm is extremely sensitive and anything you do with him has to be calm, but controlled and firm.

Got home at 8pm and everyone fine. Rode JB today and he went well, just hoping I can get him fit enough for Olympia class at david brooms. Want to do one on him at least !!! hooves seem to be ok, touch wood and if we can managed to do a few laps in canter we shall be off.

Pepper has now realised that he is a "boy" and is trying to get to everything on the yard ! He is in with jb and he keeps him in his place, but he wants a girl - no doubt about that ! lol.

Frankie (new foal) is looking beautiful even though orange, and is still a bit shy of me at the moment. He and Hetti are out with coriander, ginger and Jazz and hopefully the warm weather they promise will happen !

Jazz's cut is still healing, and Im hoping the scar will be ok. She is such a pretty girl and one of our best movers, such a shame it happened.

Most of them still have their winter coats - just not warm enough yet, and Im still in two jumpers ! come on Summer !!

Steve off to Austria this weekend - playing darts - he is convinced he is going to win, so watch this space :)

Then all the mares to be served next week and Dream is due this weekend, so might have to miss her and do her the next time.

Welsh Cobs Diary 6 May 2010

welsh cobs pictures Here is Saith Now Then, aka Frankie, having a canter on his first day of being alive. Beautiful fella, his head is so pony. Im coming around after the initial shock of a chestnut. :)

Shall be putting more photos up of him next week when I can find the charger for my camera ! Out of battery - typical. Of course this morning put his tail right over his back and gave some lovely movements and no camera ! ahhhh

Been riding JB again, and its heaven. he was a bit naughty, but who cares ! lol Luckily he is safe naughty, just gets a bit joggy and bouncy. Then a bit strong, but we are working on that part, I was thinking I needed to work a bit harder as he flew off in flat out gallop down the field with me. - trees blurring beside me ! lol. My camera has a video on it and Im going to try and take one with us galloping - that would be fun !

Taking Coriander to be served tonight, and the girls, dream and Amber to be scanned tomorrow and checked out and then I know where they are as Im not sure of their dates. This way I know, and can book the stallions. We are using David's Uther Pendragon / Janton Pheonix and Haniel Cochise. Just experimenting a bit, although all beautiful horses, just different breed lines.

Interesting time next year - must get a better chair for the barn when they are foaling though, goodness my back !

Welsh Cobs Diary 3 May 2010

Ohh we have another foal !! Now, imagine, 50% pally - 25% cremello and 25% chestnut - guess what we got, yes chestnut !!! :) He is lovely and beautiful and alive and healthy what more could I ask (pally cremello maybe) lol. Photos to follow soon. Hetti foaled after 3 days and nights of saying yes Im going to foal - its been so strange being out of the world for 3 days. Sleeping at the barn, in the cold, seeing strange shapes in the trees ! lol. She foaled last night at 9pm - lovely time ! Got home at 11.30 after all ok and happy. Had a brilliant sleep :)

Went to see some future stallions over the past week and trying some new lines - cant seem to find the lines I like at the moment, so experimenting with a few this year. Some lines I would never have chosen, but I would like to see if they suit or not.

Its going to be interesting time for us, and expensive. !! lol.

So a name for the new guy - he has 4 whites and so we were are on the lines of " Saith Now Then " Those who go to the welsh cob sales will understand, those who dont, email me !
